how common is this as a surname?

Possibly not very common in the UK, I checked my surname on this site and got over 100,000 with the same surname, checking Lebowski gave a result of 0:

www.yournotme.com - - Find out how many people in the U.K share the same name as you.

Checking the electoral roll on Search for People, Businesses and Maps - 192.com it lists just one Lebowski for 2008/09

[edit]

Checking the Google keyword tool:

Lebowski = CPC £0.32 - 3,600 exact
