...are you intending to buy/try to buy all the .uk versions of .co.uk/.me.uk/.org.uk domains you currently have?

Edit: Just testing the waters on my chances of getting the .uk version of a non-generic, undeveloped .co.uk name owned by a domainer. Nothing more sinister than that.

Nope. Will cull a lot of .co.uk, that don't justify renewing if .uk comes available.

The other thing people aren't really discussing is the benefit SEO wise which is what most of the keyword domain buyers are arsed about. We have no way of knowing how Google will weight .uk, historically new TLD's don't fair as well. Of course you've then got the age elements of the domain itself which are a factor.

If it came down to a keyword.co.uk that had age, history and the owner didn't want it because he's got a .uk domain, I'd take it in a second. In fact I'd even go as far as saying I'd straight swap my .uk version for the .co.uk if it had the metrics I needed to succeed SEO wise. If the proposal does go ahead and my large portfolio of .org.uk winners are awarded the .uk extension then I will be most definitely striking up a deal with old .co.uk owners. I appreciate everyone has their own agenda but for me who is in the business of building and ranking sites on the domains I buy as opposed to trading, this would suit me.

If you aren't going to buy the .uk version of a domain you have, then its a public admission that your current domain was effectively worthless.

What I can't understand is portfolio owners openly saying they won't renew a huge part of their current portfolio, yet they are currently selling them for £xxxx.

You can't have it both ways - either your domain is worth 4 figures, or you're considering letting it drop.

Both of those statements can't be true.

I think this is the issue with a lot of the portfolio owners here. There are a number of people owning 5k+ domains, asking four-figures each when in reality, they're not worth the reg fee. If .uk comes in, they either have to stump up £30k for domains they know are worth peanuts or risk nobody buying their .co.uk version as the .uk version will be on free reg.

In the long term (6 to 8 years out) the introduction of .uk will devalue .co.uk to zero. The actions of Nominet are the ones stripping the value. Seasoned domainers will not back .co.uk ad infinitum with .uk about. It's the transition period which is the messy and disruptive part that concerns all registrants.

The bolded part is absolute nonsense. If that was true then .org.uk's would be worth zero today - clearly that isn't the case.

Well I don't bother with .org.uk, they are rubbish. Intended for charities and not-for-profits. Sectors with very little cash for domain names.

So you don't like them, so they're worth nothing? Go look at reported sales... there are hundreds of instances were .org.uk have sold for 4 figures or more. The whole "intended for" was dealt with in another thread - Nominet are on record as saying you can use them for whatever you like.

You're living in fantasy land if you think .uk (or any other extension) devalues .co.uk to nothing (or anywhere close to it).

.org.uk sales frequency and volume compared to .co.uk is low. You may get lucky with the odd sale and believer. As an investment the writing would be on the wall for .co.uk. I wouldn't risk the funds.

Why on earth not so you have a name you regged its yours for however many years you paid but from regging and it expiring circumstances have changed not just talking if there mug enough to buy it approach either? There are a multitude of reason it can be worth x to you nothing to others…?

e.g. it used to list first page bring you in xx,xxx per year “g” local comes along punters no longer need to be either on your site or in fact any presence other than “g” they all jump ship there’s nothing to say in may not make x again but you have other projects that brings in 3 x for the same effort that doesn’t mean the sites is not worth x also that it would ever sell for it either just that’s the price,,,

It's not about the term value alone, it's about where money is best spent. The whole shenanigans will create 3 years (my guessitmate ) of uncertainty

Anybody that holds out value on .co.uk (after .uk) is born is living in fools paradise

Be sure to send me your list of .co.uk for sale then when .uk is released. If you think .co.uk will be such a significantly lesser extension. I could be in line for some bargains! If they rank the same I couldn't care less what the extension is.

Hi Redemption ( I do hope your the same guy from our 'Good' old days at Pauls (safesys) days)

Good domains retain value - (I just mean "Wordily" wise - and still there to be discovered) Sadly, I've never indulged in capitalising in development. But that has helped me focus on workable-terms... And from that point of view, it's about minimalizing competitive terms (or at least their impact)

I do agree that a simple .UK space has a lot of good ground to justify its release
