I remember AltaVista being my home page for a while after dialling in to my ISP 
Another one that succumbed to the AOL / Yahoo portal makeover. Shame it took everyone so much time to realise that people just want a search box - they don't want the weather, horoscopes and the funny story of Tiddles the cat who barks like a dog. Just one search box in the middle of the screen!
Amazing though to think this search engine was almost 20 years old!!
