isn't blue host, part of the hosting equivalent of 123-reg ?

I don't use them, but have you checked that their cpanel install is up to date or is it their proprietary control panel ?

Worse - look at their repeated downtimes this year.

A bit unprofessional as a competitor...

There are a lot of hosting companies that I respect and will happily recommend, even as a competitor.

However, BlueHost don't fall into this category.

I've had no major problems with Bluehost - no worse or better than many of the cheaper hosts (such as hostgator etc).

Hostgator and Bluehost are the same company.

Interesting and suppose that explains why they seem similar in quality to me. If you are hosting a fair number of non business-critical sites then I think these hosts are fine given the cheapness.

Obviously not hosts suitable for ecommerce and other other important sites.

They are consolidating the vast majority of their servers into one Utah datacenter. So if this facility goes down (as it has proven to multiple times), all of your sites could potentially be affected.

I stand by my point that there are equally affordable hosts with a better level of service. I have plenty of time for Vidahost, GlowHost, Pair, etc, all who provide reputable service.

We also made a business decision many years back to never consolidate everything in just one datacentre - for the reasons above. We operate out of 4 and it means that in the unlikely event of an entire datacentre outage, not all eggs are in one basket.
