Random question I know - does anyone know if they're really only big in the UK - can't find much info?

No! I mean James Bond & Sherlock Holmes  - I get the impression Bond is not big in the States etc - more of a UK thing?

Skyfall took over US$300 million at the US box office, so James Bond is definitely popular over there. You don't get to those sorts of numbers otherwise. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=bond23.htm

However, it also smashed UK box office records so it might be more accurate to say "popular in the US, very very popular in the UK"

I think the same could be said about Sherlock Holmes. He's big in both the UK and the US (for example, there's a TV show called "Elementary" that's running in the US and quite popular, based on Sherlock Holmes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherlock_Holmes ) but ludicrously popular in the UK.

So it's a question of degree. They're not obscure in one place and known in the other. They're well known in both, but tear the doors off famous in the UK.
