Everyone wants a quick flip, buy for a few pounds, sell for a few hundred at least, its the ideal money maker, but in reality, your not the only one trying this, may be thousands, so whats the probablility and how is it done..
with the 432000 hits per day from 0000 to 0000 on a single IPS tag, you can get to lookup a domain's availability 5 times a second (once every 200ms), before Nominets infamous blocking routing gets you.
take the chance and wait until 4pm, you can then squeeze your 432000 hits into 8 hours, giving you a maximum of 16.66 hits per second or at 60ms intervals.
lets take the 24hr option, 5 hits a second, or 200ms intervals.
Fundamentally the process is simple, in reality, they is clever coding to assit the timing limitations, the algorithms of which can be quite complex., but basically, on a fast same AS server :
lookup domain > 1ms
get response > 1ms
(If available) trigger EPP (x6) if available >
ns send EPP (x6) > 1ms or udp sim (raw)
register > internal
get response > irrelevant impact
(if not available) wait DAC limitation > 200ms - lookup timing = 197ms
restart loop
Check the window, thats 197ms until you are permitted to lookup again, this means that there are 196 chances for someone else to check and register without you knowing or 1 in a 197 chance. As before, this can be reduced to a 1 in 57 chance using the max 1000 per minute limit.
Well this is simple if there are just 197 other catchers, but more likely to be much harder odds because there will be many thousands, the epp can be within a ms (ie staggered), plus of course those that have multiple IPS tags on different servers hitting the same names.
Saying this, we have had many reports of 3 letter names being caught, it gets easier when the day has many due for release, not just the odd one, some customers said that caught more than 2 in a single day. Of course, going for other names, even dictionary, greatly increases your chances of capture.
