can anyone give me some advice as I've been bamboozled with information overload regarding submitting my sites to search engines and directories. Is it best to do this manually or use an automated submission site?

You can use some semi-automatic submission tools like digimax or submit express... There's a lot of tools you may use...

Don't use anything automated, you only need a couple of directories, 99.9% are a waste of time, effort, money. Some that are worth a look but usually cost (which is a good thing)

if you open a yahoo acount you get listing free
always use manual when doing listing.
dmoz is also a good one to get listed on

also terry bruceclay.com always has the latest uptodate search engine map of who is linking to who.
