I had a meeting earlier in the week with a friend of a friend who runs a few niche sites.

We've agreed to do a few joint projects together as he's happy building & maintaining sites while I'd rather play with the creative side of things. When researching names for our first site, I noticed that he was giving more importance to broad and phrase results than I have done previously.

It got me thinking. Does anyone (or indeed everyone?) use GKWT data differently when conducting keyword research for a domain as opposed to a name that you intend to put a long lasting site on?

I don't pay as much attention to the GKT as some here. It is one factor when buying a new domain however, there are loads of others. And just because a domain doesn't have decent exact searches, doesn't mean it's not a good domain.

I think it is important to look at the phrase searches as well because it will give an indication of long tail keywords that no doubt you will be building links for.

Thanks, that's along the lines of what i was thinking. I agree about the exacts not being the be all and end all. From my list of possibles that are free to reg, there's about 20 that have little or no searches but they're the ones I'm most excited about!

The advantage of using the GKWT is that you have idea of how many traffic that you are getting into or the demands of the product that you are trying to sell. But most of the time, those with high keyword searches usually has tough competition with regards to SERP. So if possible you should get an exact match keyword domain for your site because in that way you will have a good advantage of ranking in search engines with less effort, less time and less backlinks.

That explains why few people uses "-", "the" or "101", etc on their domains just to make it match with the keyword that they are trying to rank.
