.edu and yahoo answers , how do i get backlinks from these ?!?

hi , i'm told .edu are very good for seo and also so are yahoo answers.....

but how would i seek these out without paying someone to do the work for me , i've been offered these services , but i'd be happy to try and do this myself.

the website i am trying to do seo for is a uk based mail order site , that only ships to the u.k , so would .edu and yahoo answers be of much use to my seo project ?

advice welcomed on how best to go about seo'ing the site.

Firstly yahoo answers links have little to no seo effect (you can't even add anchor text, so targeting keywords would be bloody difficult ).

It is a widely debated myth that all .edu sites are ranking gold, considering most .edu blogs are spammed to death with poor quality links they are little use, anyway since you are seo'ing a UK site .ac.uk's would be the Uk version . Don't bother with .edu, .gov, .letmesellyouarubbishhypedupbacklinkatamillionpounds, most are fools gold

Try searching for UK sites (all tlds) that are relevant to your niche, that will be much more valuable.

If you have a "real" site (i.e. a well-presented authority site) then try and identify your competitors, then from there you could Google things like:
"example.com" site:.edu
or
"example.com" site:.ac.uk
(where "example.com" is the URL of a competitor - and yes, do use the ""!)

And then iterate, replacing the "example.com" with each competitor's URL in turn.

That will show you which pages on .edu/.ac.uk sites link back to one or other of your competitors and, if you REALLY hand on heart are as good or better than they are, you might be able to persuade the webmasters managing those pages to add your link as well (of course sanity should prevail: the above applies if the context is a list of resources or several competing suggestions, but nobody's going to edit an old news story or course module just to slip a reference to your website in!)

.edu blogs are quite easy to find, .edu blogs which aren't already spammed to death, not so much!

British universities seem to have a much better hold on their blogs, I've not seen any with spam on, but they are also pretty difficult to get a link on. Lucky I work for one!

Perhaps I'm drinking too much Chinese wine, but .edu, .ac.uk and .gov are not domains you can register without the proper credentials. Anyone offering links etc. from these extensions is on a hiding to nothing. What am I missing?

Many universities allow their students / departments have blogs on their domain. Because of the quality of the content they tend to get good pagerank & traffic. Some of them choose to do the odd under the radar link sale to pay for new equipment... ie beer.

Best place to look is student society webpages, they are run by a designated student for each particular society with webmaster rights to add links. Avoids any red tape, and they often have friends at other unis for more contacts. If you're lucky you'll get a forum footer link.
