email verification problem

I've implemented an email verification on one of my sites ( Petition )

The problem I've got is the email seems to be ending up in the spam folder, so the person doesn't seem to see it/get it. They need to click on the verification link to add their signature.

Has anyone any advice on how to stop this from happening?

It could be the reputation of your IP address.
Check that it is not blacklisted. If you're on a shared server you never know what your neighbors are doing.
Also, if you send HTML E-mail with linked images it's going to increase the spam score.
