Ok, I know nothing at all about games consoles, but want to get one for my kid, just had a look on the http://uk.playstation.com site and see stuff called:

PlayStation 2: Much more than just a console, PlayStation 2 is an entertainment hub allowing you to play games, watch movies and listen to music at your leisure.

PlayStation 3: Take yourself on a journey today with games, movies, Internet access, online chat, new events, services and experiences.

I dont want a game that's held in the hand, it needs to be one that plugs in to a TV and the game is shown on the TV, not on a computer, I don't want to use it for internet. Not interested in something that plays movies or music, I dont watch/listen to either, just need something you can play games on, what's best to go for that does that, is there other stuff apart from Playstations?

Any games good for a boy aged 9, the only games I know are larna croft game I saw in about 1996/7 and some car game, think the larna one was temple of doom, somthing like that, or am I getting mixed up with the Harrison Ford film

The Playstation site annoyed me as it's just stuff all over the place, constantly changing colour and images, horrible looking site, had to close it.

I would also agree that the wii is the "fun" console.

Great for kids and the whole family.

+1 for a wii for the family, but after a year or so I think your boy will want an xbox too!

Have his mates got consoles? Swapping games is cheaper than always buying.

Ahhhh, I knew there was other stuff like that, couldn't think of the names, Nintendo and xbox is what I was trying to remember, and Sega mega drive comes to mind, only because I saw the name sega.org.uk dropping tomorrow.

I wouldn't buy "Wii" simply because I don't like that word, just something about it that bugs me, probably because of the TV adverts where families in a living room are jumping around pretending to play tennis by holding some Wii thing in their hand, bloody stupid.

I see the Xbox has internet on it, is there nothing that simply gives you games without all the other attached internet/muisc/movies crap?

Sega Mega Drive is dead mate.

That's the point of a Wii, it might look stupid, but trust me, 10 mins and I guarantee you and the family will be having a great time.

In a nutshell, no....

I personally wouldn't do anything like that just to play a game, my boy is more in to stuff like exploring worlds and completing tasks etc, that sort of stuff.

Somehow I couldn't imagine you prancing round the living room like a crazy fool playing tennis... :D

PS3 or XBox then...

Or how about a pool table instead lol, that's where my misspent youth was taken, playing pool from an early age rather than playing games

Its worth noting there are games like zelda on the wii, which are fantastic adventure/task games.

The other option is to get an old dos pc and set up monkey island for him!! Oh the great memories...

Oh, now that was a great game... <nostalgic moment>

... "I want to be a pirate!" ...

@ Mat, the Beowolf game will be a bit old or violent for my boy him, but the mrs can play that :) I might have a go on the car one, that appeals to me. He should be alright with the Harry Potter one for starters and then I'll find a site with a better selection of kids adventure type games and get some of those for him.

As part of a gaming generation... :)

For adventure on the ps3, ratchet and clank, spyro, enchanted arms, are all games my gfs 13 year old bro loved.

I recommend mirrors edge simply because it cost me £3 and was a great game!

I also hated oblivion and fall out 3, both were games of the year, but each to his own I guess!

2011 sometime, final fantasy xiv will come out for the ps3, which is a safe for kids MMORPG which will keep any kid busy for ages.

PS3 console arrived today, to set it up and test it out I played Need For Speed: Undercover for about an hour, really good graphics, so much better than Space Invaders or Asteroids ever was :)

But I'm bored with it already, not sure what I'm supposed to do, reading the booket inside the game dvd case tomorrow to work out what exactly the idea of driving round like a lunatic is.

Got 2 other games being sent to me, should be her in the morning, can't remember the name of one of them, something like Aztec treasure and loads of violent shooting in it, and Fifa 2008

@ Ashton, cheers, I'll keep an eye out for final fantasy xiv when that's released.

Have you set up the PS3 for online gaming yet?, it's quick, easy and best of all unlike the X BOX it's free.
If you are getting Fifia then i would definately do it, i play FIFA ultimate team sometimes online against people from all over the place, i am not very good but , it's a good laugh.( mailnly for my son,who tells me i am rubbish)
Also my son has a mic which enables him to chat with his mates while playing online.
If you get bored with games, you can always catch up with BBC iplayer on there, or even better it is a ready made Blu Ray DVD player, i often nick my sons and bring it downstairs to watch Blu Ray DVD's.

I still think back now to playing defender on my spectrum 48k!,while the rubber buttons got really hot , amazing how much we have moved on in such a relatively short space of time.
