Looks like the jury's still out...

And also

Because the tool requires Getty code to be placed on the website the photo is embedded into, it also opens up whole new avenues of monetisation for the firm. The company has already been working with start-ups such as Kiosked, a Finnish firm which has the technology to turn any image into a clickable advert, enabling viewers to, for instance, purchase the dress Kate Middleton is wearing.

You can argue that they've shot themselves in the foot here... numerous times. If getty had come up with a reasonable pricing structure and usage/subscription types i.e. from private blog to commercial advertising them they wouldn't have got in this mess.

As it is they've expected top whack for all their 'images'. If they had come up with a pence per usage model for the majority of non-news and aged photos then they might not have needed this, and the photographers would still be getting paid.

It was a model that may have worked in the analogue era where there was processing costs and a limited range, but the digital era has done away with that.

Is it going to change things.... no, right click will still predominate.

It's non-commercial only, and you'd have to be out of your mind to pay for Getty stock for personal use, so directly speaking they aren't losing out and might get a lot of links out of it.
