I have had to relocate a website from one server to another within the same hosting company.

What I am worried about is that the new server is based in the US rather than the UK. I have phoned them and they have said it is in the UK - but I'm not sure if I am completely convinced. The name of the server within the CP is nameUS plus all dates in the CP are US format (I know this maybe software) - and new CP is completely different to old CP.

How can I be sure - one scary aspect was the fact that the site has good SE rankings and didn't want to move to have any chance of affecting these. If the site relocates to a US server it probably would.

Cheers,
Dean

As I understand it SERPs rankings in the UK will be ok provided that either:

- The name is a .co.uk (most important) or:
- The name is hosted on a UK server.

And as far as I'm aware having both those things gives you no advantage over it just being a .co.uk domain, and hosting in the US is generally cheaper. So it depends on what it is your hosting.

Someone else may be able to fill in the gaps in more detail though.

Whats the server IP?
That will enable you to find the location. Drop me a PM if wish.

can you not do a traceroute or you can lookup the ip location on the web.

open a command line and ping the site for ip.

To be honest, location or domain aren't that big a deal these days because you can actually TELL Google the area you want to target from Google Webmaster Tools.

Intresting to know.

Actually had it confirmed today that my suspicions were correct and was being hosted in the US (literally for a day) - they're moving the site now to a UK server.
