Introduction of new .nz domains

The nz-domains are the domains of New Zealand. The nz-domains belong to the unrestricted domains. Everybody can register nz-domains.

You cannot register at .nz, you must register at official subdomains like co.nz, net.nz, org.nz, gen.nz and co.net.nz. The nz-domains look now like e.g. myname.co.nz.

The Domain Name Commission has proposed recently the registration direct at .nz: The new nz-domain would look like myname.nz. Because of this interesting development ICANN accredited Registrar Secura starts the pre-registration of the new nz-domains.

It is expected, that there will be a sunrise period protecting trade mark owners and owners of domains at the official subdomains like .co.nz ("grandfathering").

New Zealand has a developed market economy with a purchasing power parity (PPP) per capita of about US$ 28,000. The high income per capita makes New Zealand to a valuable market for exports, in spite of its relatively small population of about 4,4 Million inhabitants. New Zealand forms, like experts analyze, a typical "island economy", which is heavily dependent on international trade. Exports account for a high 24 percent of its economic output.

What's the point? The decent names are already gone in .co.nz, and if their owners get grandfathered (which I hope turns out to be the case) then pre-ordering just means paying over the odds to fight over scraps.

Just in recent years, a few countries have opened registrations at the second level, so you can now buy .tld instead of .com.tld or .co.tld. In spite of the grandfathering in place, many premiums were left available at the end of the sunrise period, because the holders of the third level domains didn't see a pressing need to secure the second level of their names. In a few years they might regret it. And I'm talking about generic keywords, so the cybersquatting argument will not work.

Personally I think that the third level registrations are a relic of an ancient past but .co.nz is deeply ingrained so that would be a small revolution.
