I was looking through some upcoming droplists, as I do every couple of days, and it dawned on me (not for the first time, but I usually don't ponder for more than a moment) how it's basically a "shopping list of failures".

For instance, I picked 12 domains from one list out of 1,319 names - that's a little under 1%. For every name that might be "worth a punt" on one of the dropcatchers, 99 or more aren't even worth spending a few quid on. And the story repeats, day in, day out - usually I can't even find as many as a dozen names worth trying to save from the big plunge into the cyber-dustbin in the sky...

Strip away that wasted money, and you have to wonder what type of Nominet we would actually have with just 1% of its current income, and the same thing repeats itself the world over with every other extension.
