I don't know Mark or his background. My comments were aimed at this chap http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2008/10_october/21/millionaire.shtml

I liked this from the article;

Said Joe: "I told them I was on benefits and they still seemed quite happy to offer me large sums of money. I wanted to see how far they would go, so I made some outrageous demands.

"On one call I told them I wanted to borrow £10,000 to gamble on the horses and on another call I asked for £15,000 to invest in the stock market."

What is it with some people
Jealousy is a bad thing and this why there are so many arseholes in this industry.

You should be happy that the guy has done well. what is it with UK mentality if some one does well give them a kicking to try and bring them down a peg.

I dont know the guy but wish him all best in what doing and for the moaners get off your arse and do same thing.

Looking past the sentimental editing of the program, he seems like a nice guy.

Business is business, and if they say they gave away 200 iphone 4's for £99 each, then that cost them 60,000 and they received a lot of coverage (any press is good press) then good on them ;)

Interesting read:

Moneyweek- Mark Pearson

...Hiring a company in India to build a "very amateurish" website for £300, Pearson launched the business from his bedroom in Wallington, south London, in November 2006. He realised that social networking sites such as MySpace and Friends Reunited were taking off, so he advertised his service on them. "We obviously caught on to the viralness and the socialness of the internet. A few people told a few more people and it snowballed. If you've got a good product and a good service it works wonders, because people will do the work for you." By Christmas that year, sales of onsite advertising were pulling in £1,000 a day.

Nice! I don't know there are many council flats that are all that rough in Mossley Hill, but hats off to the guy for what he's done anyway, he's made it nevertheless!

The guy has done extremely well, congratulations to him. There's not many people who can say they have made £60m+ in three years, so definitely inspirational and shows the power of the internet industry

I think the so-called moaners in this thread have a legitimate point. If you're really interested in giving time and money to charity, you don't need to be filmed by C4 doing so. It just smacks of self-interest.

Has he actually made £60m or is he "worth" £60m? The latter could be an estimate based on a very ambitious valuation of his company.

Does it matter you can buy a lot smarties and wine gums nom matter the outcome. :p

I understand your point, but hell, if it helps someone out, or inspires someone to give selflessly then its good :)

Well I'd be interested in knowing anyway. I'm not trying to put him down either, I credit the bloke for his success either way. Whether he has done this legitimately or not I don't know but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt anyway.

But in terms of net worth, I would like to know what the figure is based on, because a person could have made a few £million and based on an ambitious earnings multiple, could use that to extrapolate a value for his business at £60 million. Now there are quite a lot of businessmen in the country who have made somewhere around 1-5 £million, but £60 million is much rarer and very impressive (if its real money earnt and not some hopeful valuation).

He won't have £60m in the bank personally, unless he already sold a stake in myvouchercodes. It'll be a value based off of the worth of the company if he sold it. Still extremely impressive however you look at it though. Its not based on an inflated amount - his site is making a serious amount of money.

That post quoted earlier in the thread was on our blog (iphone scam post). I'm going to depublish it, as we are directly competing with Mark in a couple of things now, and would rather not have it on our site at all, than have anyone find it and think it was posted out of jealousy or just for the sake of having a go at him.

I was disappointed with the program itself - I couldn't really care less if he wants to help a bunch of gay guys, campaign about knife crime in a shithole English town I'll never visit or send that nice helpful guy on holiday... more interested in insights into his business and so on :) Pretty much nothing along those lines other than he has a big house and an audi r8!
