In my venture to learn more about the domain sales game, can someone tell me why the domain MathGames.com sold for $725,000?

I don't see how one could possibly make enough profit to get that back within 40 years.

I'm sure there are reasons, arguments, etc, which is, well, the point of this thread.

Cheers :)

Why not read the reason in the buyer's own words... I bolded one of the key parts for you.

"MathGames.com is a generic domain, it’s an EMD (exact match domain), meaning it is made up of the same words we’d use to describe our product. There is been a lot of debate on the value of EMD, the changes to their SEO benefits and so on. I remain a believer in EMD domains. I knew for this venture I wanted an EMD that had a ton of type in traffic, was easy to spell and easy to remember. MathGames.com had all of these attributes (including about 100,000 type-in visitors a month)

There's more info in the rest of the article at http://www.dnjournal.com/cover/2013/july.htm

In other words, by buying the name he did, the new owner doesn't have to pay for 1,200,000 targetted visitors a year (many/most of whom could be expected to find the content of the new site at MathGames.com highly relevant)

As he says himself “MathGames.com is a name I have tried to buy since 2008 without any luck as the owner was more than content parking it, making hundreds of dollars per day in net revenue” there’s one revenue stream if you do nothing else ?

If you look at his past projects the formula is pretty simple get the traffic then flog it ….
