max wired distance, router -> computer

Am having to work from the 'garden shed' and the wireless signal is not great for internet access.

Before I start drilling holes in walls & buying kit, does anyone have an idea of what the maximum distance (in cable length terms) is on a wired connection that you can get without severe loss of connectivity?

I had one that was about 15 meters in length. That was the network cable rather than the phone cable, didn't see any noticeable loss of service with that.

I flood wired my old company office once, cat5 everywhere and never had any problems, so unless ur shed is a mile away u should b ok!

You can do a 100m run with no issues, or if you need longer, install a switch or hub at a midway point.

Don't bother with Cat5, use Cat5e (UTP) at least you can then run at Gigabit ethernet speeds if you ever want to without ripping it all out.

You'll be absolutely fine distance wise. If it's running outdoors unprotected it might be worth buying "outdoor grade" cable, although I've run standard premises cable outdoors in a tube without any problems over a distance of about 70m-80m.

I've got a few hundred meters of decent premises cable lying around that would do the job absolutely fine. It is bright orange mind you, but if you want me to make a cable up for you with standard RJ-45 connectors on each end ready to go, drop me a pm with how long you want it and your address and I'll drop it in the post.
