    Hello There,

I would like to join Nominet and have my own tag. I understand being a member allows me to purchase .uk domains at £2.59 per year? And I can bring domains to my account free (i.e. transfer them from other providers)

Costs - £400 + VAT for the membership & £100 + VAT per year for the tag?

Is the membership fee used as credit on my account? How do I pay for the domains every time I order them?

Thank you in advance, this forum looks very useful!

    Carl

You can do all that via a site like heartinternet.

I know, but as I register several hundred .uk domains it makes sense to be a member to get the reduced prices and the security of having full control of my domains. :)

Nominet send you a monthly invoice, separating new regs from renewals.

If you have loads of domains then yes it is comforting to have them directly under your control, just don't forget to monitor renewals :)

You can use any email system to communicate with the Nominet automaton but you have to PGP encrypt the messages which is quite simple actually.

When you sign up you also open a credit account with Nom that you pay monthly.. so you also benefit from 60 days credit ;)

Thanks Guys, much appreciated. :D I'm aware of the PGP stuff, I'll be using AWBS domain system with Nominet.

So I take it the £400 + VAT membership is not used as credit and Nominet pocket it? ;) :p

Also for the first year is it £400 + VAT along with the £100 for the tag?

    Many Thanks,

The Tag is free, the fee is to become a member.

You can indeed transfer existing domains to your Tag FOC (as long as your current registrar doesnt charge a release fee)

It is actually cheaper to register .uk domains at www.1and1.co.uk for £3.98 than become a member.

If you pay £400 + VAT to become a Nominet member you will get domains for £5 + VAT each. There is also a £100 + VAT renewal subscription fee per year for your membership.

TAGs are free however if you just have a TAG without a membership then names are £80 + VAT each.

    Hello everyone,

I signed up a few days ago and paid the membership fee + subscription fee at something like £587.50 :)

I paid over the phone using a debit card - what happens now? How long does setup normally take? Can I be doing anything in preparation of it all being setup. They didn't ask what I wanted my tag to be?

    Many Thanks,

    Carl

Unless you are catching there is NO reason to become a member. So you have a drop catching system in place?

Ability to be in full control of my domains

    Oh dear

1 and 1 provider cheaper registrations
1 and 1 provide free transfers

So - you simply register your domains via 1and1 and then change the tag to your own.

So, you then have a domain name on your tag for cheaper than you could have done it yourself.

As an ISP it does not look very good giving a 1and1 IPS tag to clients, at the moment we use ENOM but they don't allow free transfers in (depending on when the domain expires).

Give you clients your tag (FOC remember)

When its time to renew, simply change the domain to whomever is offering the cheapest deal at the time, renew, and change back. Simple.

Seems a bit messy to me when you have just under 1000 domains to manage/renew. Plus with Nominet you get domains at £5 + VAT for 2 years.

Too late now anyway, it's all paid. Would be interested to know what happens next though? :)

I have more than that to manage using the system above and I do ok ;)

With regards the Tag application, I had paperwork to sign and deliver regarding my credit application, a few bits and pieces to sign and then they requested a signed pgp email before they activated me tag.

At no point did they ask what tag I wanted until I got a letter through saying - here is your tag ***** - I dont recall ever being given the chance to change it.

I cant comment on the membership application because I didnt bother.

If you are 'an ISP' and can now register domains at a few pence cheaper than 123, will you be offering them at cost?
