Howdy all

My spelling is atrocious. I tend to use google search as a spell check

Anyways, had a mental blank with "definitely" last night lol

First search result url on google is d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y.com

So .... if I wanted to start a site about all things "portsmouth" would p-o-r-t-s-m-o-u-t-h.co.uk be a good alternative? And then structure the pages as p-o-r-t-s-m-o-u-t-h.co.uk/football-club/ p-o-r-t-s-m-o-u-t-h.co.uk/university/ and so on.

Is a keyword in the domain name that important?

This is why it's ranking 1st - http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/www.d%252De%252Df%252Di%252Dn%252Di%252Dt%252De%252Dl%252Dy.com/a!domains

I wouldn't ever suggest a similar domain under normal circumstances. e.g. You would have the same chance ranking with thatplaceonthesouthcoast.co.uk as you would p-o-r-t-s-m-o-u-t-h.co.uk

I thought Google only counted the first 4 characters or words and ignored the rest, not sure where I got that info in the past but that's what I found when researching.

Thanks peter_w. So many questions ... I'm a bit of a 'Tim Nice But Dim' !!!

How important is the anchor text linking into my portsmouth site though from directories? (If I was to set up a portsmouth site that is!)

If I want to be ranked well for a keyword, wouldn't dmoz and yahoo directory listings for example link me as Portsmouth . And isn't that better than That Place On The South Coast?

Also, would there be no exact match benefit? Google search and keyword tool seem to know what I'm searching for with p-o-r-t-s-m-o-u-t-h. It doesn't come up with "did you mean ... ". And I was always under the assumption that a keyword rich domain name was better for adsense revenues ... giving more relevant results?

This is my next avatar by the way ....

and l-o-n-d-o-n.co.uk and .com have gone .... portsmouth is soooo boring the more I think about it!! :(

It's a good idea to get Portsmouth in. After that think whether easy to spell, market, remember ... I don't like the multiple dash separated names though.

After that, it's the content of your site that you need to focus on. Good content is probably more influential than the domain alone.
