I recently caught a .uk for a potential use in a side project with a partner, the .co.uk became available for purchase.

My partner in this niche, is over the moon he see's .uk at the future and the .co.uk as fossil fuel just waiting to burn out and die (he bought the hype).

I'm not in a position of arguing / explaining that the .co.uk is beneficial and should be obtained.

I never thought I'd have to push a .co.uk over a .uk :/

Looking at it from a development and marketing angle, and presuming you own the .co.uk and forward it, I don't see any downside to .uk

I chose to build my personal business site on .uk and have built sites for 2 other clients on .uk

I think some domains sound and look better on .uk and there is no noticeable downside in SERPS.

Personally I think the uptake will be slow but in 5-10 years time it will be the norm, even if I am wrong and it isn't adopted by the masses I don't see any problem with choosing to use .uk

both should be obtained, then nothing is lost.

I personally think co.uk will become secondary to .uk over the next 5/10 years also. Its better looking and shorter imo.

I tried to start on .uk recently but i have keep explaining to customers its .UK not .CO.UK - this is the constant problem!!

I agree When you tell people your email address on the phone you get asked do you mean .co.uk and end up having to explain things.

Its going to take a good while or someone big moving over so people know it exists.

If the business is solely online then maybe there's an argument to go .uk as it will probably win in the long term. but for me when you think about offline advertising it just looks like a typo at the moment.

I think the issue I'm having is explaining the dynamic of .co.uk + .uk now, and the change to .uk + .co.uk. The risks involved and the gamble, its a complex guessing name.

I just never thought I'd be arguing pro .co.uk over .uk. Its almost alien.

The constantly correcting is something I had when I owned steve.co and my surname .co, just non stop telling people its just .co not .com or .uk and had the same with .tel.

I just forward the .co.uk email to the .uk then it doesn't matter which one they use, if they say 'do you mean .co.uk' I just say yeah that's fine and get off the phone.

I don't think the money is the issue, its certainly not enough to be bothered about. I spend more per month on hosting for example.

How much are you looking at to buy the .co.uk Steve?

Personally I'd have taken it, and not given it a second thought. This is why I don't like working with people, I like taking my own risks but sometimes you need someone's contacts and skillsets :/
