noindex/follow on index page?

is it possible? I don't want the index.html page indexed, but i do want the rest of the site indexed. Will google follow this command?

Interesting question. Not sure how it would affect your rankings but would be interesting to see if Google immediately picked another page to 'act' as the index/authority page.

Depending on what you want to do with your index page, you might want to set up some kind of redirect as well.

i recollect seeing some config options under the google webmaster tool. from memory believe when you upload a sitemap with pages, make sure you not only mark the index.php (or .html) but also the route default home as noindex

fyi - would also be woth indicating the noindex on both the meta tags on the index page and in a robots file
