Nominet ROR release 6-9 per minute

If you signed up you will have seen an email from Nominet with the subject:

“Confirmation of sign up and next steps for the .uk right of registration release”

Basically Nominet is to allocate EPP .uk create commands based on (a) number intended to register and (b) amount of credit with them on 21st June.

So how many dropcatchers here chose 10,000+ domains (to get 60 creates per minute) and now have to deposit £37,500 + VAT with them?

Doesn’t this also favour the larger registrars who will now have an advantage in catching .uk names? Most larger registrars have a larger credit limit anyway and therefore more create commands by default?

"We will refund any excess money on account after you have paid the invoices for the registrations you make during the release process"

So as long as you can pool together the money, you can get the biggest amount of registration attempts and then they will give you the money back anyway

I'm not a Nominet member or registrar so can only read the info on here. But if it is true that Nominet have introduced a system where their largest registrars (i.e. the ones that pushed through .uk) have an unfair advantage over smaller registars is it possible this method of distributing .uk domains could be challenged. The government specifically looked at unfair advantages big business have when negotiating contracts and published a report. Includes this foreword:

'Micro and small businesses are vital to the UK economy. There were 5.3 million of these businesses at the start of 2015, 99% of all private sector businesses in the UK. Over 5.1 million were micro businesses (0 to 9 employees), with total employment of 8.5 million and combined annual turnover of around £670 billion. The Government wants to make sure that these businesses prosper. Last year, the previous Government launched the “Protection of Small Businesses when Purchasing Goods and Services Call for Evidence”. This asked whether the current legislative framework regarding the sale and supply of goods and services to micro and small businesses sufficiently protected them; or whether there was a gap in the law; and the potential impacts – both the costs and benefits – of applying certain consumer protections to MSBs, or other options.'

I am not a legal expert, and haven't spent much time reading up on this (perhaps this area of business is not covered by this report) but it might be worth someone looking into this.

I’’m not sure if Nominet link available credit per membership in this circumstance ? However I suspect due to legacy / size reasons many of these registrars above have their own Nominet credit accounts ?

Finally if a Registrar such as 123-reg registered all their .uk rights already:

Then how can 123-reg claim it wishes to register 10,000+ rights during the drop days ? Is it going to sell other people’s rights to the public during those five days ?

Or will we see as we did in the .wales .cymru landrush these names get hoovered up by MONSTER and GODADDY etc https://ntldstats.com/tld/wales

I read that as the limit is ‘shared’

Eg. If your credit account is eligible for 6 per minute than all your tags will get 6 per minute

Ah ok, coming from a dropcatching point of view, I read that as the quota is applied across them, much like we do with DAC quota for "related" accounts.

Ask yourself this: Is this not a shabby system that gives ALL its members an advantage over the general public, who will be standing at the back of the queue, as always?

The general public don't pay yearly to be tagholders. However all tagholders pay the same yearly fee.

In regards the general public:

Public dropcatchers signed up with 6 requests per minute can:
- open up to 6 connections to the Right of Registration EPP system (subject to EPP AUP)
- can request 6 good names within the first second at 14:00 BST (per day)
- can process 6 less desirable names per minute after that (360 names an hour)

Result: if you are a paid dropcatcher going after 1-100 good names you will get 6 names at best per day.

ACP Registrars signed up with 9 requests per minute can:
- open up to 6 connections to the Right of Registration EPP system (subject to EPP AUP)
- can request 9 good names within the first second at 14:00 BST (per day)
- can process 9 less desirable names per minute after that (540 names an hour)

Result: if you are an average ACP registrar taking 100 - 1000 public pre-orders you can process 540 an hour and hope for 9 good ones per day.

A Large Registrar signed up with 60 requests per minute can:
- open up to 6 connections to the Right of Registration EPP system (subject to EPP AUP)
- can request 60 good names within the first second at 14:00 BST (per day)
- can process 60 less desirable names per minute after that (3600 names an hour)

Result: if you are a large registrar taking 1000-10,000 public pre-orders you can process 3600 an hour and hope for 60 good names per day.
