I'm currently working on a new affiliate site based on a domain name that encompasses a range of products. To try and explain my question, I'll use 'computer accessories' as an example. I plan to write about 1,000 words in total on 'computer accessories', 'mice', 'keyboards', 'flash drive' etc and was just wondering if it makes any difference when trying to rank for 'computer accessories' whether all the copy should be on the homepage or if it will still rank OK if I had say 400 words about 'computer accessories' in general on the homepage and each product category having it's own page?

I would preferably like each product to have it's own page so I can try and rank for them in the future but feel this may initially compromise how well the homepage ranks for the main keyphrase.

Thanks in advance,

Johnny

If the target keyword for the homepage is "computer accessories" - this should be the focus of the content for that page. Adding lots of content about specific computer accessories will make things worse, not better

OK, that does make sense. I always thought having as many words possible on the homepage that is either completely or semi-related to the target keyword would help it's ranking.

Alrighty, thanks for that Peter.

ok so words between 350-500 keyword density 2-4 %

it does change for certain niches

have more pages as it looks better than one

make sure you have a site map in place

you thinking of using word press ?

also internal linking structure inportant

OK, thanks Steve. Yeah, I'm familiar with keyword density %. My plan was to actually have all content on the homepage, hoping it would rank well for "computer accessories", then separate pages for the products (no content) but I'll just have separate pages for each product (content and products).

Going to hand build it using PHP. Hate WordPress because I don't like the design templates that are available; prefer having complete control over the look of the site.

Normally with sitemaps, I have a separate page called sitemaps.php and list all the main pages of the site; did this work OK?

Regards,

Johnny

Just my 2C

Whatever your keyphrase is you are trying to rank for on the page, try and have a hyperlink with that anchor text in the page content

e.g. ranking for 'flooring' - in the content you should have a link with 'flooring' in the anchor text (in the middle of the content = best)

Yeah, I normally have 2 anchor links, one in the first paragraph and one in the last. Probably one link too many; I'll put in one somewhere in the middle for this site.

Also - if you've never seen them - check out www.worldstores.co.uk, they have a great number of sites ranking well, so could look into their SEO strategy ref: homepage/category pages

ref their on-page seo - not sure about their off-page

Off-topic... but this is surely just making work for yourself? Why build a CMS to manage when you could just create your own theme into Wordpress a lot quicker? And obviously you still have complete control.

Exactly. And everyone knows how much Google loves WordPress, not to mention the time-saving All In One SEO Pack plugin.

I'd do different pages for each of the keywords you're targeting if you're working on this long-term. It's much easier to focus your efforts on this and you'll get a bonus for page URLs such as /flash-drives.html, plus your index page will be much more focused rather than trying to target everything at once.

CMS? That's building something like Drupal! I'm not a web development genius (although, I am the 17th most intelligent human being alive...on my street). No, what I do is come up with a draft design on paper then build a template using Dreamweaver which I can use for every page across my sites; takes me about 15 mins to build the template. Then all I have to do is import the copy into the template. Simples!

I did try and modify wordpress themes but there were too many folders and didn't have a clue what I was doing. And I've heard that some people have had their WP sites hacked in to and lost all their content. Much safer to build web pages offline and then upload them to your hosting.

Typing out the description, title and keywords into the All-In-One plugin takes the same amount of time as typing it into Dreamweaver so it's not exactly time saving. Plus, when I did try using WP, there was no option of using header tags, which does help with SEO.
