Is it possible to join Nominet just once, but use that membership to manage the domains for several different companies? How would that work when it comes to separating billing, renewals etc? I'd welcome any input you've got based on your experiences...

(Background: in this case, there will eventually be 3 companies that will each own .co.uk names, but 2 out of the 3 companies will only ever own a couple of hundred domains each. It would be handy if the 3rd company - which owns many thousand names - could have membership of Nominet and become a registrar, but have all 3 companies profit from the reduced pricing that comes along with that)

You can definetly have more than one tag per membership, as I have two. But Nominet will only bill one company, that company would then have to invoice your other companies.

But I doubt Nominet will bill those companies directly for you at the reduced rate.

If I understand correctly, the main company would be the registrar (their TAG) and that company would act as a registrar for the other two. Nominet would bill main company for all domains registered and it would be up to the main company to invoice the other two companies (presumably at cost).

At least that's how I would see it working.

Edit: As greywing says you can have multiple TAGS if you wanted to but I don't think that was your main issue, although having each companies on a separate TAG means you would easily be able to view each companies domains in Nominet control panel under an individual TAG.

If you put each company on a separate tag within one account, then Nominet generate invoices for the domains regged / renewed on each tag separately on a monthly basis and all names are billed at the Nom member rate. The payment comes as a single payment, but you have separate billing info for each tag.

As you would be running a "public facing" registrar (ie one with 3rd party clients), you'd need to have full registrar status with all of the added hoops wrt publicly available info regarding your service & terms - registrars operating an account purely for their own names do not need to do this.

So it sounds like it would probably be simpler to just set up for the company that holds thousands of names (that way it's not public-facing) and let the other two stick with "normal" registrars at modestly higher prices. Thanks for all the input!

I would add that in my experience, Nominet staff are some of the most helpful people I have ever spoken too. I would suggets giving them a ring and I'm sure they will answer anything you need to know.
