photo compression?

can anyone recommend a good free tool to compress photos to put on a site?
i have about 20 photos that takes an age to load

It all depends on what format and size you save them.

.jpg are compressed format and smaller in size but you do see a drop in quality
.png are as is more or less and are higher in quality

I'm guessing the image is huge in size pixel wise and you've resized it onto a webpage so a quick resize down to the correct pixels will sort it.

If its just the 20 email me a rar file with them and ill get them down to a good size/quality in photoshop

Could always try gimp. Free "alternate" to photoshop.
