The internet registry operator for Europe's .eu domains will forcibly dump yet more internet addresses, with a decision to kill off any domains in the Cyrillic alphabet.

In a note this week – provided only in English – the registry said it will forcibly delete any .eu domains that include Cyrillic letters on May 31, 2019, regardless of whether registration has been paid for beyond that date.

Another nail in the coffin for a crap extension. Anyone trying to do business with a .eu is taking a risk as the registry has shown themselves to be petty and there are better extensions around.
'The registry hasn't said how many domains will be affected but it is estimated to be around 1,500 in total.'
I think that says it all about the uptake.

Also if I remember my schoolboy russian correctly isn't the word for union 'soyuz'? Don't know why they are then going with the Russian 'u' in replacement extension.

So what does the 'ю' stand for? it is the cyrillic depiction of the letter 'u' and is pronounced the same but doesn't stand for anything. I was correct that the russian word union is 'союз' pronounced 'soyuz' and bulgarian is 'съюз' which is similar. Both begin with 'c' (s in English). I wonder who is advising them.... sounds like a shambles to me.

Being in cyrillic is not the issue - that in some way is logical. However picking a cyrillic extension that doesn't mean the same as the thing it has just replaced is not logical and suggests to me that at no point was anybody actually asked that used Russian or bulgarian etc.
The correct equivalent extension of .eu would be .ЕС in cyrillic (even that should be .CE So they are still mixing languages anyway. eю doesn't stand for anything. In the old days it was cccp (sssr) not юccp (ussr).
It doesn't really matter anyway - just .eu which is already a poor extension with a poor uptake seems intent of making it worse instead of improving. I've only ever seen nominet do that.

Sounds like they are plucking defeat out of the jaws of mediocrity

Interesting... so it doesn't even translate?
