Unfortunately I won't be able to make the conference

I wanted to take this opportunity to remind people that nobody is forcing you to play Nominet's game.

Nominet have done a brilliant job of focusing attention on the specifics of "how" .uk should be introduced, not on "if" it should. A first class piece of media manipulation, which has not only framed the debate, but buried the core issues behind straw man arguments about security.

But that doesn't mean you have to play along! If you object to .uk itself, make that objection heard loud and clear in public (in front of a live and web audience)

Right now, much of the debate is like arguing with a cannibal about whether it's ok to just nibble an arm or a leg - we need to get back to "NO EATING PEOPLE - period!" territory...

Sorry to hear you can't attend I was hoping you would lead the charge.

I agree with what you are saying here. We've all seen this type of approach before and the feelings can easily be diluted by losing site of the objective.

We would all like to make millions but we can't do it by selling something to our customers that they have already bought from us.

I spent about two full weeks (8 hrs/day plus) doing the background research for my position paper, more time writing and revising it, 3 days staying in a hotel in London for the Nominet consultation, plus regular blog posts and comments, additional research (eg TM and Alexa 500 documents, etc), collecting media reports (and commenting everywhere I can), Tweeting vigorously and so on.

So I don't think I was exaggerating much

If the opportunity arises, it may be worth probing Nominet's approach to consultation, data quality and adhering to data protection legislation by asking the opening question "When will Nominet be emailing all existing registrants to ensure they are adequately informed about the consultation exercise ?".

If Nominet reply that they will not be emailing all existing registrants, maybe ask these follow-ups :

(1) Since the superlative phrase "widest possible set of stakeholders" clearly includes as a minimum all existing registrants, how is their failure to contact all existing registrants compatible with the October Board communique statement that "The Board supported the Executive’s plans to engage fully with the widest possible set of stakeholders during the consultation period, including appropriate outreach across all regions of the United Kingdom." ?

(2) What specific legislation or related principle do they believe prevents them from contacting all existing non-personal registrants, and what specific advice have they received on this from the UK Information Commissioner's Office ?

(3) What specific legislation or related principle do they believe prevents them from contacting all existing personal registrants, and what specific advice have they received on this from the UK Information Commissioner's Office ?

(4) Will Nominet indemnify registrars against legal action by existing registrants for failure to inform them of the consultation exercise for such a material change to the positioning and status of their existing registrations ?
