Search Engine Question..... For an Expert!

Hi there

I have managd to get my part time business site onto google no1 for a few of my 'local' keywords - such as brochure design chester, onto top of p2 for logo design chester etc etc

How do I take the next step up and get to the top of p1 etc is it all about links (I don't have any at the mo)

My site is Chester Creative - Graphic Design Logo Design Brochure Design Web Design & Print in Chester Liverpool Manchester
if anyone can have a look round and tell me if there is any obvious (or not) SEO I have missed - I am new to SEO by the way!

watch out for the crap directories! I would only ever submit a legitimate business website to a directory that would bring visitors... IMHO - yahoo dir is well worth the sub fee for a commercial site.. its worth more than 200 crappy links from directories on digixmas..

I'll agree to disagree with you on that one Stevie. Thats one of the things i love about SEO, its so open to debate!

spammy keywords tag 375 words is over the top... reduce to about 25 max.. not many engines read them anyway!

title tag is a bit long... should be less than 100 characters..

no H1, H2, H3 etc.. headers anywhere..

"no text" consider increasing the homepage content to 150/250 words... or deleting your entrance page and developing home.html

Would agree with get rid of the first page and go right into the site, adding content for topics on the botnav would be useful and link it all up.

I'd agree with the comment about too little text on your front page. One solution could be to replace your initial "please click logo to enter" page with your home.html page. Take people and search engines directly to the content.

Typically the page you reach when you type in your domain will have the highest ranking on the search engines - put good content and the top internal links on this page.

Make the keywords / phrases in the footer into links - to internal pages on your site (creating new pages with new content where required), using those keywords as the link text.

Remove the 'search engine optimisation' link - unless you have a way to provide that service to your clients that's better than posting on here asking for advice!

I agree with "too many keywords" and no page structure - no header tags.

More content, and regularly updated content would be good. Generally from a human and robot point of view I think you need much more content. Too many of your services are just items in a list and there's no detail on your offering - this leaves me wondering if you do offer the services or if you just added them to the site (that's the first impression it gives me at the moment). Perhaps that's related to a business rather than a design issue - are you really specialising in what you're best at?

Partipiate in forums like this, and others where your potential clients will be partipiating - this is good for rapidly building up links.

Write a company or personal professional blog.

Consume and produce RSS feeds

I'd suggest obsfuscating your email address, or using a contact form to reduce spam.

Do you only work for UK clients? If so say so, otherwise use an international standard for your phone number.

There are billions of web pages on the Internet. It's obvious that not all of them can be listed in the top 10 results on search engines. Search engines only list web sites that they find relevant to a special topic. You must make sure that your web site is such a site.
Google explains the ranking algorithm on their company pages:
"Traditional search engines rely heavily on how often a word appears on a web page. Google uses PageRank™ to examine the entire link structure of the web and determine which pages are most important.

The more other web sites link to your web site, the higher your search engine rankings will be. The idea behind this concept is that search engines think that your web site must be important if many other web sites link to your site.
Of course, the number of links alone is not enough to improve your search engine rankings. It is also important that the other web sites are related to your web site. Links from unrelated web sites won't do your own web site much good. If the links to your web site include your important keywords in the link text, the effect on your search engine rankings will be much higher.
If search engines find that the links to your web site and the content on your web site match, they will give your web site high search engine rankings for its topic.
