Hi,
done it couple times long time ago. basically a waste of money i feel.
if someone is after the domain , they're after it.
it's far cheaper to showcase on ebay. its free on here & other forums.
it stays on the homepage of sedo for just hours & is usually not rotated properly (whatever thay say)
save your cash!

From exp., I'd say it does work...
You have to be selective and realistic in your asking price though...
Research is the key really...
The name you have in mind to list may not be the best one to run with...
Personally, I'd run the ones your looking at by SEDO first, as they have more access to current trends data and what buyers are looking for...
This in-turn may well be helpful in aiding the decision process...
Maybe sedo can provide you some stats on the success rates and 'in which' niche area too...
