Stamp Valuation Help Please (with Pics)

Hi All

A relative has given me some stamps and I want to sell them. I bet some of the people here have an interest in stamps and I would appreciate some help regarding possible value . I am reading up on stamp values now!! I have started a thread with pics on another forum at:

I would appreciate any comments regarding possible value. Feel free to make comments here if that is easier. At some point in the future these stamps will be for sale, possibly on ebay. :razz:

Stanley Gibbons is the place to go. They are on The Strand in London, and are considered to be one of the best

If ebay is anything like collectors cards for selling then I wouldnt waste your time. Some things just dont sell on ebay!!

I collect stamps and mostly buy GB ones off Ebay.

The main thing to remember is just because its 'old' doesn't mean its valuable - still thousands produced of the stamp.

Like that 1½d brown King Edward VIII stamp from 1936 only worth 30p in the catalogue:

The valuable ones usually have something wrong with them, limited edition, or unused sheets etc

Yep I have a big box of somewhere and remember being really disappointed as a kid that they were worth a few pence each even though most are a hundred years old!

When it comes to pricing up stamps, I have always found that the value of the stamp is written in one of the corners. Use this as your golden rule and you will not go far wrong

Accelerator, prima facie, those stamps have no value at all. I used to be heavily into it; just Victorian GB and I guess my most valuable stamp (and most attractive) was a lightly-cancelled £5 orange. Then I started specialising in the 1d reds, blacks, blues and started trying to build plates. Then it became rocket science (really) and I had to give it up as it could take three opinions to even confirm which stamp I was looking at.

I used to buy and sell on eBay and made a few quid, but the real players on eBay know their stuff and unless you're sure of a stamp's provenance and are able to describe it exactly and precisely, you are knackered as people won't deal with you.

I have a couple of EII 3d violet tete-beche pairs; one of each watermark. They are also pretty. Loads of EII misprints also but some are valueless even though they have real printing errors, and some are quite valuable.

You can't collect stamps too seriously when you're a domainer. There's just no time

Thanks guys. I am going through the collection just to see if there's anything of any potential. I am rapidly learning that old stamps doesn't mean value!!! I think investment potential is better in domaining and it sure takes a long time going through them all!
