I have a large website which is built using static and Wordpress templates (that all match in design).

I would like to move the entire site over to Wordpress for ease of administration, using a new template.

What would be the best way to do this and preserve all (page) rankings, etc?

I'm thinking I could take my time and build the site up on the domain in question using a protected folder (e.g. /thisismynewsite/ to copy over static pages one by one), then when it's all ready move up to the root of the site.

Then, 301 perm. moves for the established URLs to the new URLs?

Any help and insight welcome!

Thanks all. :D

wordpress we all know but what's 'static' mean?

If you set up the urls of the wordpress pages the same as the static pages then 301's shouldn't be needed. The htaccess for the wp permalink will handle them fine.

Set up wp & get the page structure in place with categories etc. Depending on the theme there may be a variety of templates for the layout or you can create your own.

Worthwhile thinking about custom post-types & taxonomies if the pages are of certain types outside the normal post/page/category defaults.
