Can you suggest a them that can be used for a local town community website.. using wordpress.

I look after our local U3A site. I use a Suffusion theme. It comes with several templates and is fairly easily customised.

Just to warn you, the Templatic theme is absolutely full of bugs and holes and when attempting to report them I and many others have been given the cold shoulder.
