nothing to do with domains, sorry, but i figured that they may be some techie types on here that may be able to help me :D

im living outside the uk, and have lots of expats living around me, and there all asking the same question about these 'watch uk tv abroad' schemes going around.. they basically seem to be VPN servers or proxy servers that give you a UK ip address so you can watch BBC iPlayer, etc.etc.

Does anyone know what these websites are using?
Co-located servers inside the UK running some software?
If i was to rent a server to do this, how many subscribers do you think i could have to have a decent system?

and of course, can u recommend a hosting company that would allow this?

Thanks in advance. (admin - feel free to delete this message if you feel its nothing to do with this forum)

A colleague was running a scheme like this for a while, he just found a company that ran very cheap VPS with a good amount of bandwidth and set one up for each client and charged them a premium.

Squid should be fine as a proxy server.

some company's are charging as little as a fiver a month.. surely you cant have that many users/subscribers to cover your hosting per month and offer a quality service? i dunno?

we can get sky tv here,...with a 3 metre satellite dish = a £1000 a dish.

all im thinking of is the quick buck..

Before the likes of TVCatchup I used to have a client colo a slingbox. Not cheap to get roof space for the feed.

Now the best way is to get a small vps and do it nice and quietly. The problem with advertising a service is people like TVC will find out where you are and block you.
