THIS IS NOT A HOAX - See link to prime minister's own website below.

The EU (and therefore the UK gov which receives directives from the EU in food matters) has agreed to a trade agreement called "codex alimentarius" which will ban vitamins, supplements and many herbs across the EU in December 2009.

In response a petition has been filed on the prime minister's website. It is already the 10th most signed online petition in the country, out of thousands.

Petition to: oppose the adoption of the Codex Alimentarius (WHO/UN) proposals for restriction of the presently freely available herb/vitamin/mineral food supplements. | Number10.gov.uk

Dame Judi Dench and Mel Gibson, both activists for health freedom have helped create a short 27 minute documentary called "We Become Silent" giving details of what is going on. You can see it on Google Video:

We Become Silent - The Last Days Of Health Freedom

I don't think linking to a petition on the Number 10 site proves this isn't a hoax. Anyone can start a petition on there for anything!

I agree it's not a hoax, but a bit of googling will show you it's been highly sensationalised by conspiacy theorists etc.

Downing street staff have to approve each petition and the fact that it is one of the most signed petitions in the country affords further validity to it. But just in case anyone has any doubts whether this is a hoax the food standards agency website will confirm the UK's acceptance of these new regulations:

Food Standards Agency - Codex

In fact the food standards agency has no choice but to accept this anyway because the EU dictates food and agriculture policy to us as it has done for many years.

There's no need to start accusing people of being conspiracy theorists - the facts are there, easy to check and plain to see.

Well check the other petitions on there for validity of seriousness of what's aloud on there.

On the vitamins things, no chance no chance no chance will that ever get through in the UK.

That industry donates millions to people and parties in power with back handers all over the place, it will never ever get onto the law books just because of the dodgy deals that go on.

Lets face it, that's why smoking isn't banned, that's why guns aren't banned in America, it's not what's right, it's who donates most.

I think you misunderstand the relationship between the EU and its members. They issue regulations and we have to follow them. It already is "in the law books" to the extent that the trade agreement has been signed and is coming into effect this December.

As for the millions in donations, that is small change compared to the lobbying funds of the pharmaceutical industry, who are behind this trade agreement. They have been trying to destroy the vitamins/ supplements/ alternative medicine market for decades so people only have the option of buying synthetic drugs. Looks like they've succeeded.

They are the same people, have a look who makes 95% of vitamins, it is the pharmaceutical industry.

Obviously not going to be settled either way this discussion until December but my view, never happen.

Anyway it's not a big thing, They banned cocaine years ago, can still buy it. I'm more p1ssed that they banned powerful lightbulbs.

yes these new energy saving bulbs are garbage, apparently all the pound shops sold all there stock of old type bulbs in a matter of days when the government released a statement about all old style bulbs will not be available from such and such date.

I've got a friend in Serbia that sends me a box of 240w bulbs every so often, oh the light! There is no comparison in the quality of light.
