Hi all,

I'm considering registering a .co.uk domain with the intention of developing the site. It's a 2 word domain, the 1st word is completely generic and on it's own gets over 200k local exacts. The 2nd word goes hand in hand with the 1st (as well as being catchy, memorableal & easy to spell) though they may not necessarily be searched for as a phrase.

I appreciate that this means I won't instantly get type in traffic to the site but I'm not instantly put off. Should I be, and are there any other factors I should be giving consideration to?....... I would be adding original content to the site and keeping it updated if that helps.

Thanks as always,
Billy

It's good you're thinking about this BEFORE developing the site. More difficult to change later.

If the generic is gone (and assume with searches every possible extension us gone and probably TMd) but just my opinion, I also look at other similar searches for the keyword and see if there's at least one that is free on a .co.uk, and brandable at the same time as searchable, pronounceable and memorable. Not necessarily niche though that you can't escape from.

It, IMO, gives you the instant advantage of exact match in search engines (which does still exist) which can get you to rank for the generic quicker

If not, the route your considering is the next best thing

Thanks for your input, that's exactly the sort of response I was hoping for.

Using what you've said and just for hypothetical comparison purposes, if I find a 2nd search term to make a phrase that gets around 1-3k local exacts, how much quicker do you think the site could rank?

And in addition to the above, is it always preferable to rank a site quickly? I'm not personally in a massive rush but if the longevity of the site is affected, my view might change!

I guess it depends on what your site is for (affiliate, direct sales, adsense, subscription, service etc....)

I have a site where it ranks in Google for it's URL keywords and did so within a couple of weeks (but of course all industries and competition are different) - but the keyword I really want has the word 'in' within in. For example I have BlueWidgetsWales but want to rank for BlueWidgetsInWales because the exact is higher

Despite ranking for the exact, I'm nowhere for the keyword with 'in' included, even though it's my title tag. For the exact I ranked on 2nd page within 2-3 weeks.

Just need to make sure your keyword exact of 1-3,000 exacts doesn't lower the resale chances of the business, people's ability to find or remember you - or limit you too much in to a specific niche that a brandable wouldn't

I suppose I see it as mainly being an information site relying on an affiliate scheme for income. My thoughts are to also have a forum on the site but beyond that I'm keeping my options open for now!
