50 Business That Swapped their .com for a New gTLD

It will be interesting to see what effect the new gtlds have on the secondary market over the coming years. I suspect for .uk it will be negative overall, but, as the author points out, ".Com is still the gold standard and will continue to be so for years to come."

Could be embarassing for those who pooh-poohed the new tlds!

I was a bit skeptical about all the new gTLDs at first, but have changed my view somewhat, as some choice domains are proving valuable. That said, I have no immediate plans to register any and still prefer prospects for .com.

Well, as the author points out sheepishly at the end of the article, he didn't even list 50 as nearly half of the businesses listed had previously used a domain that wasn't a .com. There were .net's, .org's, .org.uk's, .co's, obscure cctlds and domains with hyphens in...

So obviously if your old domain was a bag of shite then opting for a new gtld would be one way of improving it without incurring the cost of getting the equivalent .com. Not without problems though, not least with people remembering the domain wrongly. It will be interesting to see how many of these actually stick with the new gtld.

I wonder if there will be an article about 50 MILLION businesses who didn't give up their .com

Time will tell. It's a fickle world

Barclays might consider it well worth investing in their own tld, rather than having to register every cctld in the developed world every time they launch a new service. Maybe there is a security aspect to it too?

It would be surprising to see a real bank move to a .bank. That just looks like a phishing attack waiting to happen.

Lead.bank

Here's the first one: http://www.bizjournals.com/kansascity/news/2015/07/01/lead-bank-domain-name-switch.html

Imo .bank will be standard in the US. We'll see with the rest of the world. 85% of the 5.000 .bank regs until now came from US banks.

"sheepishly" - take that back :)

If you've ever done a blog post, you need to know that the title has to be teaser. I could have found 50 .com examples, but this was more about showing the most creative and best new TLD results.

Nah, most are just defensive registrations imho.

leadbankonline.com is a particularly shitty domain though. leadbank.com is ambiguous & was already owned by a sales leads company, while leadbank.us is registered to a different firm again, so it's not really surprising they switched. Almost anything would be better than where they were.

Don't forget, .com is the cctld for the US

It would be unpatriotic to use any other extension.

You're right that not having the best .com domain makes it easier to go for their .bank.

I've never seen the patriot card being played, when it comes to .com. Anyway the .bank TLD is different than any other TLD, because it proposes a safe haven for bank customers. Banks have huge problems with spoofing, phishing scams and malicious redirects.
Behind .bank is a long list of banks. 5.000 domains have been registered already - 85% by US banks, and most will move to .bank over the next years.

I can see a big trust factor with the .bank extension. I like the potential :)

What a collection of awful domains (apart from sport.wales and possibly the international character domain). If that's the best that's on offer then the new GLTDs are truly doomed.

I can see the author has registered here, I don't mean to offend him but calling these businesses "creative" is stretching things a great deal. Plus, he missed an obvious "winner" for his list; gov.scot is the new home for the Scottish Government, it was previously scotland.gov.uk

I can only see value in a small number of phrases for each of the new GTLDs - never enough to make it work (apart from geographic GTLDs - they stand a decent chance)

We only need to look at the failure of .biz etc to see it's just an exercise in making money.

OK I take it back. But you can still beef up a headline without making it factually incorrect. An interesting read overall though so thanks for posting it.

It won't help prevent fraud.

If a bank uses http://example.bank the scammers will use http://examplebank.com or http://example.bank.com-free-money-today.fr/ee-money or any one of millions of other options available to them.

If .bank is being sold as the cure to online bank fraud than I'm afraid the banks are crediting their customers with greater technical knowledge than they actually have, or the scammers with less creativity & ingenuity than they actually have.

It's just snake oil. :|

When you start off with your domain being some of these.
Then anywhere you go from there doesn't really hold much credibility.

Most of these original addresses are not impressive, so no real surprise they changed.

As for easy recall, when you have a choice of 100's of extensions it's a retrograde move, remembering the extension can be harder than remembering the domain name.
Looking for a memorable .com or country code domain is the way forward.

I agree. .com is really still king. Country code is decent if you are country specific. However, I am now keeping an eye on these new extensions, as some of them are selling for good money.

antrobusgolfclub.co.uk
antrobusgolf.club

the only thing that has changed is now you don't know where they are.

they already own the rights to

antrobusgolf.uk

so choice of

antrobusgolf.club
or

antrobusgolf.uk

And to make it worse, was the extension .golf or .club ?
