50 .London Domain Names Were Auctioned For A Total Of 65,611 GBP

50 of London’s most-wanted premium internet domain names were auctioned off to raise money for charities across the UK capital.

The first domain auctions ended on the 30th of July but some domains were kept alive by continuous bids that extended the auction end by a day each time. One domain ended on the 13th of August. But enough about this failed Pool/Minds+Machines auction model and on with the auction results.

The 50 .london domains were sold for a total of 65,611 GBP or $102,504. The top domain was flats.london that was sold for 10,500 GBP or $16,404. The average sales price was about $2,050.

Some of these went for decent prices. Wouldn't have thought there would be people willing to spend this much on .london domains.

One of my clients paid over £6k for one in the landrush auction, where they were bidding with other companies in their niche. Suprised me at the time how much they were willing to pay as I was bidding on their instruction, but they dont require that many leads to make the money back.

I wouldn't fancy paying £1k to renew the two-letter domains on the list – would soon add up!

Surely it reduces the value of a 'premium' domain though? I've seen a four-letter .london domain with annual renewal fees of £1,399.99 on GoDaddy, so you'd be looking at shelling out £14k over the course of a decade (assuming the extension is still going in ten years' time, which I imagine it would be in the case of .london but maybe not for some of the other new gTLDs with premium renewal fees).

Say you decide to sell the site on Flippa a few years down the line – how many punters are going to be interested when you through in a casual 'By the way, it'll cost you £1,400 a year for the privilege of renewing the domain name'?
