If you're going to be selling hosting, then cPanel is the most popular panel for the Linux / BSD market.

If you're not selling and just looking for your own use, then take a look at webmin, it's GPL and does direct edits on config files rather than taking over your server like most other control panels do.

I agree cpanel is the most widely offered by hosts, what's more cpanel to cpanel transfers are usually free with most hosting companies, I mean hosts gladly do it themselves for free.
I'm using cpanel on my shared account with ahosting.biz as well.

the only one I have been recommended so far is Plesk.

Depending on how many domains you want to manage, for who and the OS you are using, there are several choices (in no particular order):

CPanel offering leased and outright purchase options. A favourite amongst professional hosts.

Another firm favourite, Plesk - following SWSoft rebranding to Parallels the price of Plesk 8 (Purchase) has rocketed to $1399! You could of course opt for the leased version but for 30 domains you are still looking at $30/month.

Parallels also offer Parallels Pro, H-Sphere and Helm

Direct Admin

Webmin - FREE

Have a read of the many discussions on who offers the "best" control panel and have a look at the online demos. Personally I would install locally so you can get a feel of what each panel has to offer.

Just my 2p worth.
