Advice on developing a domain name please

Ok, so one of my domains (the one I feel has most potential) I have decided I will try to develop first, build up some traffic to it if I can before I move it on.

So, once the website is set up, and meta description, keywords etc... have been set. how would I best go about advertising it.

I was thinking that one route would be via posting it on facebook groups etc... but I'm unsure of the traffic this would generate, it's not commercial, so I don't envision too many issues with posting it, as long as I stick to relevent groups/pages.

what other methods are there which are easy to do? I don't mind about it being time consuming, it's just I'm a beginner, so knowledge is limited.

The site I'm creating is going to contain youtube emo music videos, fall out boy, escape the fate, etc... (embedded into the site, so not hosted by me or anything.)

The domain name itself must be a recently dropped domain, when I set the DNS to sedo earlier, they pointed to the previous domain name holders parking page, had his asking price and also 2 offers which he's clearly ignored and let the domain expire.

I messaged Sedo and they sorted the issue within 5 minutes of my email, it's just a shame I cant see what the offers were, when or who made them.

But it makes me believe it may have potential if developed.

The emo scene died out years ago I'm pretty sure.

I don't think there's any real potential with this domain.. "developing it" (if you can call putting some youtube videos on it developing) I think would be a total waste of time.

If it's a hobby site go for it, if it's a business venture it's a nonstarter.

It may had have offers on sedo doesn't mean it's a decent domain.

I wouldn't bother developing it...

I agree emo music isn't quite as big as it was a couple of years ago, but it's still pretty big, and it wasn't just posting a couple of videos on it and calling it a site, I am hoping to develop it into a kind of directory/database site, with lots of videos, from as many emo artists/bands as I can.

I suppose I have the domain name for a year, there's no harm in trying to develop it, and just keep an eye on the traffic, see what happens.

The days of making a new site by just throwing together some YouTube videos are long gone I'm afraid. Unless you've got a really unique twist somehow that makes the site interesting.

Hate advising people against going ahead building something but I'd think long and hard about whether it's worth the effort unless you personally love emo music.

I do really like emo music, so I suppose I could see if it does get any visitors or not, didn't take too long to set up, and I reacon as long as I occasionally switch the featured videos and add some new ones to the list page too I may make a decent small hobby site out of it.

I just think that having a selection of different artists, as well as different featured videos from time to time, may draw in a few regular visitors hoping to find someone new to listen to or a song they've not heard before.

It's pretty small at the moment, but I reacon if I build on it, and keep it add free etc... it will be fun if nothing else, thanks for the tips regarding the potential value of the domain though, not what I wanted to hear, and if an offer comes in for the domain I'll be over the moon, but if not, no big loss really, and will stay as a hobby site.

So you're going to create a site full of emo videos from Youtube. Why would I want to use the site, other than say, I dont know... Youtube?

Search 'emo music' and set it to play lists - http://www.youtube.com/results?filters=playlist&search_query=emo+music&lclk=playlist your site just became worthless to someone looking for emo music. Google certainly aren't going to send you any traffic.

Murray is right - if this is a business venture, its a nonstarter. If its a hobby then why not give it a go if you want. Personally I'd spend the time building a site that was fun, but had some sort of practical application later. Learning how to build a youtube video site is never going to make you a single £.

I'm not really hoping to make money from it, hence keeping it ad-free. First hope was just to generate a little traffic to the domain.

But I think the main advantages over youtube will be 3 things.

1. No need to search.
2. No need to filter through them to find the official music videos.
3. Higher chance of spotting a new or slightly more obscure bands, as the majority of the ones who rank higher in the youtube/google searches are MCR, Fall Out Boy, etc...

I do agree the playlists feature does this quite well, but you still get lyric videos and covers a lot of the time in quite a lot of the playlists.

I think now that people have given their views, a hobby site (as I will enjoy running it, even without profit) is probably the best way forward for it.

I think the 3rd of those is your best point - the first two aren't correct really. As soon as you add loads of videos etc you are going to need to search your site (whether its done via a search option, or by scrolling through them manually or whatever).

Why not just make it a site for up and coming Emo bands? At least that way you have some sort of unique selling point.

Though I don't follow emo music, if the point about it being a dying niche is true then 'up and coming bands in a dying niche' doesn't really sound like a brilliant thing to build a website around

For me this is just another case of the best plan of developing simply being 'sell the domain and use it to fund developing something else'

If you're a beginner, I would recommend using WordPress and finding a theme that best suits the product. I've always found using both organic and paid search has helped me. Improve your search visibility by using market and keyword research to plan the site architecture, and then invest the hard work into nice-looking content which matches user intent. You can then complement this with PPC advertising.

The others are right, so that tells you your chances of getting investors or buyers.

But you're interested in the topic/content, so that's always a plus. Chances are, you're not alone.

What I would do with little effort and no expense: Start a blog. Write/review/recommend, etc. emo music videos, records, bands, etc. Do it free on Tumblr, maybe, set up the domain to resolve to it, and have at it. Start hooking up with others on Tumblr who may share the same interest in music, and just build up "followers" as you proceed and have fun.

As the others said, hobby. Could pay off. Even if it doesn't, you've enjoyed yourself. Nothing wrong with that. Best of luck to you.
