Makes sense. Do people remember and understand the domains when you tell them?

As a domainer. No I dont like it.
As a developer, I am forced to like it and lump it.
It does make sense if building a new site. No matter how much we dont like it, its happening, and in less than 5 years from now it will be fully established. I develop on .uk now because I don't want to have the hassle later down the line.
We are already seeing bigger companies make the switch and new companies adopting .uk as there presence. To put it bluntly. If you think that .uk will "never" overtake .co.uk then you are mistaken and why not? It has everything going for it.

Things .uk doesn't have going for it:
- Any incentive or benefit for existing registrants who switch
- Any pioneers (no big brands are forging the path for everyone else to follow)
- Any sense of urgency (so why would it catch on)
- Any public recognition, or conceptual understanding (isn't it "just a typo"?)
- It's shorter

Points 1-4 against are true today but as time goes on they get weaker and weaker and tomorrow .uk will have made more ground. We British are good at leaving things to the last minuet. Just imagine the registrations in the final week in June 2019 once the likes of fasthosts and godaddy do their scare mongering on TV. Its an unstoppable beast.
The big domain companies will be pushing this in the run up to 2019 and pushing it hard.
Its top level ! it wont fail but only ever get stronger.

Like me, your bold positive statements are just guesswork, but I see no reason that the situation will be markedly different to where we are now.
There will still be no reason to change. Unless Nominet do something, my points above will remain exactly as true as they are today.
Probably for the first couple of years, people will register their .uk because they have to. After that time if there's still no traction, .uk could follow the path of Betamax and only be adopted by the crazy few who maintain a belief that it's somehow better

Totally agree. Don't forget it wasn't long ago before you asked anyone a web address and it would be www dot ..... Not so these days. Short and less complicated is always going to win.
I bid a few k on this name on the DL auction.
The reason I did so, is because I like working with generic/descriptive/EMDs.
Realistically the .com and .co.uk are gone forever and totally unobtainable. This was the only alternative. It is the only time I have ever bid on a .uk, and I probably won't do so again for a long while. Just my 2p!

Interesting that they couldn't even be bothered to set up the www. subdomain on it.
I would have thought that ebay.uk should get hundreds if not thousands of type-ins a day given the millions of visitors going to the .co.uk. So they're missing a trick there.

Do they have too have .uk as their primary site or will a .uk acknowledgment do like a redirect ? The issue with news sites is the amount of content involved and people linking to it. Can we mix some retail in there ? like argos pcworld etc
