I seem to be getting a bit addicted to domain names, I spend many hours every day and night searching for what I think are suitable names, I only meant to buy a few domains to test the water, but so far, I have registered 29 since November 2nd, mostly .org's and a few .co.uk's, far more than I planned on buying at this stage, I have even spent hard saved money that was put aside for my new mountain bike :(

I'm on a pretty limited budget compared to most members on here, I only have a maximum of £35 per week to spend on domains and day to day stuff, and then every third month, that money is used to pay for my phone/internet bill, so I have 1 month in every 3 where I have nothing to spend at all, so I need to be careful about what domain names I buy, but now I'm not really sure I'm buying the right type of thing, could an experienced domainer please send me a PM so that I can PM you back with the list of domains I have bought, just for advice to see if I am looking for or buying the right sort of thing, cheers.

Decide your budget for the year, then times it by three because that is what you will end up spending!!

When you find a name you think is the best thing ever, dont reg it for 24 hours, write it down, sleep on it and look at it again! If its gone its gone, you will prob find quite a few that after 24 hours look crapper than they first appeared to you lol...

Does it sell a product or service? If not its prob just plain crap!

Stick to what you know best when choosing names, the industry you work in, the hobbies you know well...

If you havnt been able to sell a name in the first year, give up and get the mountain bike out again...

Good luck...

Hi Nnh, thanks for the reply/advice, mate.

That bad huh, actually, I can quite believe that, I suppose it's fortunate that I don't have much money, otherwise I would end up spending all of it

I have been doing that, I must have 500 names on notepad at the moment, deleted several hundred more as well, constantly searching, then find something I think is better, then think, hmmm, are these even worth writing down, am I doing the right thing, so many choices, so little money, never quite sure which ones to pick from the list, and what I have been going by is fairly high keyword searches, where the key words exactly matches the word/words of the domain.

Yes, luckily, most of the domains I have bought can be used for either selling a product or a service, and the odd dictionary word as well.

Stick to what you know best when choosing names, the industry you work in, the hobbies you know well...

There is not a lot I know concerning any industry, I've mostly done manual labour all my life, labouring and hod carrying, that sort of stuff. As for hobbies, I am a completely addicted scambaiter, there is not much that I don't know about the various types of internet fraud, 419 fraud in particular, that I have learned over the last 4 1/2 years, I usually spend at least 14/16 hours every a day involved in someway with online fraud, whether that be by baiting scammers, or warning potential victims, I do get quite a lot of emails asking is this real, is that real etc.

I do have a small anti fraud information website, I was thinking about starting to buy up scam/fraud related domain names and just redirect them all to my my anti fraud site, the only thing is, those sort of domain names wont make much £ if I wanted to sell them on, plus the cpc for them is not great either, also, the keyword tool tells me there are not many searches for them either, some only in the very low 100's and far less, and up to about 1000 or so, meaning I would be spening money and not getting much in return for them, apart from maybe a bit of extra traffic and some extra Google Adsense clicks

If you havnt been able to sell a name in the first year, give up and get the mountain bike out again...

Funnily enough, someone sent me a PM earlier on after reading this topic, I sent them the list of domains I have bought, and they said they were interested in buying 2 of the .org.uk's if I wanted to sell them, they said not for a lot as thay are only .org.uk's, but if I was interested, to let them know, they didn't tell me a price they had in mind, so maybe he meant like an extra £10 more than I registered them for, I don't know, I'm not selling anything at the moment anyway, early days for me yet.

I didnt even know what 419 fraud was! :) If you have enough knowledge on any subject and can write pages on it they will get you traffic, adsense and other affiliate marketing options can be worked into them, this gives you some online marketing experience and can give you good ideas for developing some of your better names while waiting for sales.

One other revenue stream could be to sell your lists, I know that a few people would pay for that info ie. here is 100 names and my thoughts on why they are worth more than reg fee.

Assuming that it makes sense!! :)

I was going to say similar to rob.

One of the things, I see so often are people with fantastic names like 'egg.com' and they have a f'ing site about the best way to make eggs (not exact example just idea). When egg is really really brandable. There are loads of these kinda names not just generics but names that are reg fee and have massive potential.

One I saw recently was comicmail.co.uk, so many idea's, comedians hotmail ? joke of the day ? funny pictures by email ? there are loads of great uses for a developer to use.

If you setup a simple newsletter for joke of the day, each email you send out, has an advert and any relevant affiliate links.

One of the newsletter type scripts I saw uses queues, so you can queue 200 jokes and and leave it going, for 3 months at 2 per mail.

Cool name, great idea's, but time to do it.

With my lists, I note the domain name and then idea's I had for the name, and any supporting data in a folder, this can make a name appealing to others :)

Oh yeah anti-scammer sites are sometimes funded by financial institutions donations, if you do it well and you include info about phishing and give 'real life' examples about emails you have been sent, which are going around the scene, with information on how to tell its fake (most banks for example have their site with this generic info) and probably won't mind you 'borrowing it' if your site is helping them.

The banks don't show the exact current emails, so if you site shows what the current fakes look like and highlights the problems on how to tell it fake. Inform your readers how to report it to the bank with links to the banks own info, have a donation link on the site. If enough people visit and visit the bank the bank will notice the traffic and you may get a nice surprise :)

Invite users to send you the latest information, allow blog comments, make it interactive.

Worse case scenario this turns into a loss leader :)

A .org or .org.uk would be ideal for this idea which means the odds of you getting a nice domain even for reg fee is high.

Bank fraud 'phishing' costs MILLIONS so if your making an impact, rewards will come :)

@ Rob, I couldn't sell name lists, I would feel bad trying to sell something that people can easily check for themselves, plus I think the names I have won't be worth trying to sell, just about all of them are .org.uk anyway.

@ Skinner, as for news letter/joke of the day type thing, I couldn't even do that, I have no techy skills, which makes developing sites for any domain a problem for me, I don't know any coding or how databases, sql, php or scripts work, any site I make has to be made using html on notepad, then editing/updating on notepad, takes ages any time I want to do something.

I have ideas for thing, but no skills to do any of it :(

People can do stuff, if they have the time for it is another matter.

Worth a crack, could post five names with a quick overview or stats etc then do 'buy a list of 100 other similar for £xx'

Voila, extra cash to reinvest in some names.

Wouldnt be afraid of giving it a crack, all people can do is say no :)

Pick up hosting with a company that includes hosting with Fantastico Deluxe, which will have wordpress on a 3-click install. Will take you a while finding your away around wordpress, but would suit such an information site and word press information is available easily online and it has a massive forum of helpers (will get better info than here).

Straight info link Shared Web Hosting Plans | Evohosting - Web Hosting UK or http://clients.evohosting.co.uk/aff.php?aff=060 my affiliate link (added as an afer thought)

The extra small package at £20 a year allows for 2 different websites, Tim the guy who owns evo will happily let you carry your hosting up pro-rata (so if you decide in 6 months you need the small package, he'll carry £10 off the extra small against the upgrade to small.

That includes Fantastico, and all you need to get up and running with hosting.

Evo has an affiliate program also, so you place 'proudly hosted by evo hosting' with a link on your site too (i must add affiliate link to posts like this), then you can hopefully pay for your hosting with that and some beer money over too.

If you wanna try word press out for free goto WordPress.com Get a Free Blog Here and look what people can do and sign up for a free one. Don't fall into the pitt of using them to host your blog as you can't really generate ad revenue on there, you need your own install.

So don't buy any domains for a month, buy cheap hosting and you can start on the revenue path, it would be pretty hard not to make £20 a year on ad revenue with an active site :)

oh Fantastico is basically about 100 programs that install in 2-3 clicks with no geeky skills required, just google fantastico :)
