Hi,

I've recently registered anglocoal.co.uk at godaddy and when I performed google search for 'anglo coal', it was displaying results for 'Anglo American', the multinational mining company. Also, the domain anglocoal.com was registered by Anglo American. I've performed a trademark search and found out that the term 'angloamerican' was trademarked but there wasn't any trademark for 'anglo' or 'anglocoal' in the mining category. But still, do I have any reason to worry? If I try to sell it, how much would it be worth?

Thanks

Worth nothing.

There’s no reason to have registered it except that the .com was registered. It’s not remotely a descriptive or generic domain name.

Your best bet is to delete it.

Hi,

I've recently registered anglocoal.co.uk at godaddy and when I performed google search for 'anglo coal', it was displaying results for 'Anglo American', the multinational mining company.

Oh, so you registered it first, then found out about Anglo American, I see.

What made you want to register anglo coal? what was the appeal?

Well, I usually pick a sector before registering a domain name and brainstorm different names related to it. For some reason, I wanted to choose a domain from coal industry. And I was thinking of names like coalsupply.com, coaljunction.com, coalmart.com etc., which were all taken. So I wanted to see if there were any ccTLDs available. My first two choices for ccTLDs are .co.uk and .in. And the primary keywords that came to my mind when I thought of these ccTLDs are "anglo" and "desi" respectively. Like anglocare.co.uk, anglopizza.co.uk, angloschool.co.uk or desichef.in, desiforum.in, desisarees.in etc. So I found that anglocoal.co.uk was available and I immediately registered it as 'Anglo' is a brandable name. I just hope there isn't any trademark infringement here concerning the word 'Anglo' in the mining industry.

Essentially, I think what people are saying, is that it seems very random that you came up with Anglocoal. You don't tend to think of the word coal and then the word Anglo together.

It sounds like you very well knew what you were registering. Why would you register it if you had done your research and were worried about trademarks? Wouldn't you check the trademark issue before registering.

However, I don't believe there is an issue of them winning a trademark case. I feel if a business/website was ever built on it, they would potentially try taking legal action, even if it would more than likely fail. It's not a domain I would want to own.

As I feel you registered it knowing full well the other company had a similar name, I would delete it.

I don't understand what's so random abt putting the generic word 'anglo' in front of a term? It could be put together with virtually anything. And I didn't do the research before registering it because I am very new to domain investing which I've started only a week back. Also, not to boast abt my ability to come up with names, I've come up with the names Travelzuzu and Robobureau. But this time, I've checked before registering them. I've found out that both companies exist, but they don't own the .com domains. And there are no trademark issues. So I went ahead and registered them. It's okay if ppl believe that I registered 'anglocoal' knowing full well that such a company already exists, but I hope such beliefs are not arising from a mindset which says, 'if I couldn't think of it, nobody else can.' Also, there's me being a novice contributing to the whole thing.
Anyway, so you suggest deleting it because you believe that I registered it knowing full well that such company exists. But I didn't. So what do I do? Still delete it?

Well, as far as I know, anglo refers to British people. And I'm a bit surprised to find out that anglosex.co.uk and angloporn.co.uk are still available while anglocars.co.uk and anglopizza.co.uk are already taken. Maybe I dont know a lot abt the word and its cultural use, after all.

Anyway, thanks for sharing your opinions

'Anglo' is not someting you'd commonly see in a domain name or even generally TBH.
