Afternoon folks, just getting back into business. Been out of action for a while with a bit of a crappy health issue for the past five years!!!!
Good grief, how things change, but still remain the same. Having come from a publishing and media background I have decided that I need to learn t'interweb stuff... So I have embarked on a new development project that will set the world alight with interest and gasp with amazement about how simple it was... ???? Hmmmmm... There is always an opportunity I s'pose to imitate Facebook or the Google people... but I need to understand more about the web than I do currently...
Are there any recommended learning/documentary materials about search marketing etc... I have much to learn in a short space of time...
I have been playing catch up for a while now, but perhaps some recommended and definitive reading would help... (in any format - including paper and books!) - places where knowledge has traditionally been hidden.
Thanks...

Hi Andrew and welcome - sadly, I don't have an answer to your question, hopefully someone will be along who can help.

Gosh - the power and speed of the web... thank you!

Suzi,

That was very good of you to post a response... thank you.

I am not a natural 'blogger' as I have a slightly old fashioned and traditional view of the use of the English language - I still capitalise, spell check and punctuate my mobile texts. Nor can I cope with the concept of Twitter and Facebook very comfortably. But this is all part of my learning experience. This is actually the first blog that I have contributed to!

I admit from the outset that the motives for this are the normal avaricious commercial ones, but I am convinced that some of the traditional values of publishing: credibility, reliability, decency and honesty (honestly, really!) seem to getting some traction on the web. Folk no longer seem to accept what is presented to them at mere face value, but expect some reassurance that what they are being presented with needs to adhere to some level of correctness. And quite right too.

Soooooo... I am trying to create a business concept that combines the slightly old world values of traditional journalism, with the dynamics of the web... So, genuinely, thanks for you prompt repost... it encourages me to continue to learn some new tricks!

I'll give you one piece of advice for free.

Never buy an ebook or join any nonsense schemes etc.

All the information you need is available online for free. Just research then research some more. :)

Anyone can make or supplement an income online, it really is simple. For more information just buy my ebook at ......... just kidding :)

Welcome and good luck.

Jim

I'm the same, and you will find a few language snobs here too.

If you're looking to go in a journalistic direction you might find Prose Point useful. Online newspaper and magazine software | ProsePoint

I've not used it yet, but had my eye on it for a while for one of my geo domains. And it's free.

This is good stuff

I have to say that I am impressed with the prospect of creating this sort of 'conversation' and the benefits of blogging...

My reservations about FaceBook and Twitter are that they seem to generate such vacuous drivel about people's private lives that may be important to them, but (with all due respect!!!) I am not interested!!!

On the other hand, getting useful, helpful and positive feedback from folk with the same sort of mindset is great and quite addictive...

So thanks for the thoughts... and the research comment is quite apt... I have found a load of stuff to read up on - far, far too much in reality, so being able to rate or grade this stuff or, better still, work from recommendations is really very useful.

The internet is an amazing gateway to a lot information, but the only drawback is how to find the relevant stuff... AND this is really good experience for structuring any new website... cut out the nonsense and make it relevant... make sure to appeal to the correct audience etc... obvious I know, but easy to forget.

Thanks Jim.

Welcome

Hi Andrew, hope you are completely better. There are a lot of conversations going on about domainer news being a growing area, apparently there are quite a few of us about, some small (like me with just a few hundred domains, and 60 ish sites), some big (with thousands of each), but we all enjoy reading about other domainers success, and lessons they have learnt. Well I enjoy it anyway, and hope to be written about some day, well work looking into, I like DNjournal, always interesting to see who is doing well, and how they did it.

Kind Regards
Leon

Most information is free, but if you go somewhere good (like a private forum) you're not really paying for the information, rather you are paying not have to sift through a million shitty threads to find the good information.

If you can, I'd pay $150 a month and join seobook.com. Go through all the training modules, then participate in the forum and you will learn a lot faster. You could try and learn it from free places like Digitalpoint, but its so polluted with crap its almost pointless.

If you are serious about developing a site, then I second the above advice. Money very well spent. As for books, if you are going to go down the road of a commerce site in any way, try Don't Make Me Think by Steve Krug. By web standards it is ancient (2004 I think), but the advice is still applicable and worth a great deal. For inspiration in actually getting a site off the ground, try selfmademinds.com (by Scott, a member here). The early blogs are what inspired me to get serious about my sites.
