How do you go about setting up private nameservers and have them point to a lander on vps.
I can do it with parked domains on a cpanel host but what I would ideally want to do is just set the namesever and have them point to a vps IP.
Sedo and the likes do it so it must be possible just cant seem to find any info online on how its done

It sounds like your talking about custom wildcard name servers.

I haven't used this guide, but knowing what you need will make it easier to find help.

Thanks skinner I don't know whether I've been sent on a bum steer but I've been told this cant be done via cpanel as that needs a virtual host set to resolve a domain.

I'm not sure were I'm going wrong but I though if I went to godaddy set a host at say ns1.anthonyifon.com and pointed it to my vps ip then any domain with this nameserver would point to the vps IP
Is this not the case as it doesn't seem to work

Have you registered glue records at the .com registry for ns1.anthonyifon.com and does the anthonyifon.com zone have a valid NS record and A record for each name server you're setting up?

This is were I'm getting lost I think I thought I only needed a glue record if I wanted anthonyifon.com to use the nameserver ns1.anthonyifon.com

In the zone on goddady I set an A record for ns1 with the IP of the droplet I'm pointing it at

I didn't change the nameservers I just left them with godaddy ones.
If I actually visit ns1.anthonyifon.com via the browser it does go to the default server page.

I'm not sure if I need to do something with bind on my server

I assume you mean in the anthonyifon.com zone. You've set up ns1.anthonyifon.com A AN.IP.ADD.RESS where AN.IP.ADD.RESS is the IP of what? Is it the IP of Godaddy's own name server or is it an IP on your server?

I set it to the actual IP of the droplet

If AN.IP.ADD.RESS is an IP address on your server, are you running any name server software (e.g. BIND) on that server and if you are is it configured correctly to listen on port 53 of the IP address on that server (and allowed through the firewall)?

If you want to operate your own name server you do need to run name server software correctly.

If you are wanting to use an A record belonging to your own domain name to point to an IP address of a name server operated by a third party which you have some use of, this may not work if the name server software they are running isn't configured to accept queries via your A record hostname. It is likely that it will only accept queries from A records they have configured.

Thanks Invincible

I stupidly thought if I setup a host on godaddy ns1 with the ip of the host I wanted point to
Then godaddy would do the rest for ns1.anthonyifon.com act as a nameserver

I now think this host on godaddy is just there to glue vanity nameserver to a big hosts nameservers for example.

I'll have a read through one the bind guides at digital ocean and spin-up a couple more servers and play about
