You guys are a knowledgeable bunch, maybe someone here can help

Lightbulb in bedroom blew, put in new one, light didn't come on

Checked the fuse, switch was down, switched it back up, still off

The switch is for the lights in the extension part of the house, they've all gone off

The switch is staying up, it's not being tripped back down, but despite being up the lights still aren't working

Any ideas? is this going to need an electrician?

Thanks

Not a DIY fix.
Either a break in connection to switch, or failure of switch (MCB) Best to leave dead switches off in case there is a loose live cable. Call an electrician

What's a break in connection to switch? a broken part of wiring somewhere in the loop of lights? is it likely to be the ceiling light where the light bulb popped or is it just as likely anywhere?

The MCB is the switch in the fuse box?

Thanks

It might be that your fuse was too high to save the bulbs, could it be that your bulbs blew?

Daft question but have you tried a new bulb(s) in there?

Murray.. Try this as its worked for me in the past!

Go around the entire house and switch off every plug socket (including fridges, freezers, washing machines etc (I mean every plug socket, period), plus unplug any strip power extender leads which may have multiple devices attached it. Once done, then go back to your fuse box and flick the switch back up (fingers crossed it shouldn't trip).. If it doesn't trip (which is shouldn't), then go around the house switching things back on one-by-one..

Give it a whirl as electric can be a funny bugger sometimes :)

By doing the above you're going through a process of elimination which will hopefully either resolve the issue (or) find out what was causing it when flicking switches back on - Good luck!

Thanks for the advice, I'm not sure it will help in this instance

The switch that went down only controls 4 ceiling lights, everything else is working ok

The switch will go back up fine but the lights still don't work, it doesn't get tripped back down by turning on light switches

It's looking like it's going to have to be an electrician, hopefully it's just something they can test and change in the fuse box

I'm tempted to try and change the ceiling light myself, the one that blew the bulb, see if that fixes it but I think by the time I buy one, watch tutorials how to install it, then fuck up installing it, it still wont work and I will wish I called an electrician in the first place lol

I'm thinking the same as Greg e.g. faulty breaker (especially if the other sections are not tripping).

The good news is it won't be a costly job of replacing the whole board :p

Great success!

I forgot a neighbour down the road is an electrician, I've only spoken to him a couple times but I went and knocked and he was kind enough to come take a look

It was a something in the fuse box that blew, he switched it over to a different one that wasn't being used and all is working now

What a relief, was imagining someone have to come crawl around the house for hours tracing wires trying to find a fault

I offered to pay him but he just kept saying no it's fine it was only 5 minutes, I will buy a card and put some money in it and pop it through his door as a thanks though

Thanks for the advice guys
