I've stumbled across an expired domain that has 49,500 local exact searches, 74,000 global exacts and a cpc of approx £2.13

Should I grab it?

Don't just look at exact matches, how easy will it be to monetise and what is the competition level for you to get a worthwhile ranking in Google?

Unless it's a TM, with that amount of exacts the domain is probably worth something, even if they aren't going to develop it.

its a .co.uk

it's a .co.uk domain name.
Anyway picked it up for a couple of quid so not a big loss if I can't do anything with it.

it's actually a university domain . . . . .so that brings me on to my next question . . . will it be trademarked, and even if it is could i use it to set up a forum etc for students of that university to communicate?

Yes, definitely. There doesn't have to be a formal trademark registration for a trademark to exist.

Everything else aside, the figure given by keyword tool looks flawed to me on this one. "london met university" only gets 1,000 local. I just don't think there's going to be anywhere near 49,500 for "london metropolitan university".

Actually, I believe they could be right. If you type "london m" into Google and you have the suggestions turned on, "london metropolitan university" shows up as one of the top suggestions. Since these suggestions are algorithmically ranked by Google based on what it has seen people searching for in the past, it's no big leap to imagine it gets the kind of numbers the keyword tool is showing.

I work at a University and know that they are pretty protective on the use of their name and don't allow anyone to use their name.

In the past they've shut down Facebook Groups etc and sites who use the name and give the impression that they are official.

I think you may have trouble with using this domain.

Just my view.

Set up a review forum. You can do that.

I doubt they would persue you as it would cost them money to take proper action.

Review sites are fine even if trademarked.
