I think I've mentioned Hacker News before, I'm a developer by trade so I like the idea of creating apps as much as I do domains so I follow it quite regularly.
A while ago this fella asked hacker news for a review of his new webapp http://awesomenessreminders.com. I thought it was a bit of jokey type website that he'd knocked up and didn't expect to make any money: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1616154
Now I've just read a thread saying he has 750+ paying subscribers! http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1677645
I'm sure he's got to be careful with regards to how quickly the numbers might escalate, but the cost of calls wont be that much and hiring people to make the calls wont be that expensive? I also think the churn rate would be very high, so at some point the site will find a natural balance and he wont have to hire any more staff etc. Just hope I have an idea like that someday.
