The next stage in one of the biggest shake-ups of the way the Internet works is taking place today and it means businesses and website owners should start preparing for the change.

At present there are 22 generic top-level domains (gTLDs), such as .com, .org and .net. However new rules mean that brands, communities and even cities could apply for any top level domain they might want, in any language or script.
