Hi Everybody,

I just wanted to inform you that due to the negative publicity surrounding exploitation of peoples' efforts to find Madeleine McCann, the young English girl who was abducted in Portugal, all related 'findmadeleine' domain names have been blacklisted. There have been similar situations in the past with other such domains, which we have resolved in a similar way according to Sedo's policy.

Should anyone have any further questions or queries I will be more than happy to help.

What about any commision that the domainers earned while it was parked at Sedo? Will this still go to the domainer? Sedo should send it to the family fund to help with the search of Madeleine.

While I find the people who registered the exploitative names extremely distasteful, and I'm glad that Sedo is taking a firm stand, Sedo can't IMO actually refuse to pay commissions on traffic they have already accepted (at the time) as valid - they can't claw the payment back retroactively since when the traffic was sent to them it was still "valid". Sets a very bad precedent otherwise...

Good news Shaun, quite right that Sedo has done this IMO. :)

I can see where your coming from however I guess it does depend on Sedo's T&C/AUP as to what they can/can't do in this situation. Would be interesting to know anyway.. if these domainers do indeed make money off this sort of thing (which I'm sure they did due to the sheer traffic/media exposure of this case) it will happen again. How long was the site active and generating money via Sedo?

The only real way that this could be prevented from happening in the future is a some kind of moderation system until the domain has been approved any money earned by the domain can be clawed back if needed and given to a charity or something. Not sure on the legality of all this though - a bit food for thought anyway :)

Hi Everybody,

People making money off such things is of course something that Sedo wants to avoid - all of the domains relating to this were parked in the last few days and we reacted as quickly as we could. It sometimes takes a while to spot these things, as we obviously have millions of domains parked with us. Once we saw what was happening, we blacklisted the domains straight away.
